The energy seminar will be held on 4th December 2009, (FRIDAY) starting at 2.30pm - 4.30pm, followed by an open forum with additional speakers joining the podium, all dedicated to energy efficiency.

Scotland has set some of the most aggressive goals for renewable energy production in Europe - 50% by 2020 - and is making significant progress towards achieving them.  Famous for its wild weather and seas, Scotland has managed to embrace these natural phenomena to its advantage and harvest these resources to replace fossil fuels, and taking steps towards becoming the energy exporter for Europe.

Scotland’s ‘renewables’ success straddles energy types, different geographies, numerous stakeholders, and has resulted in an energy evolution that is an interesting case study on long term thinking, working together and across typical silos and capitalising on what natural resources are available.

Of particular interest to HAESCO members will surely be the project finance aspect, partnering agreements, and new technology.  For project finance, if renewable energy projects can be financed in Scotland how can we leverage and apply this expertise for innovative project finance elsewhere in Asia?  How were these projects backed? by international banks, grants, esco, or government funding?

About the speaker
Based in Scotland, Mr Tom Lamb is head of the energy and engineering team of Scottish Development International, the economic development agency for Scotland.

Tom has been involved in the both the private and public sides of this sector for years, and has a rich international background having contributed to JVs, technology transfers, partnering agreements and sales and marketing functions.

At this breakfast he will explain more about Scotland’s renewables successes, from technology highlights, to the government and stakeholders’ approach to making it happen.

On Saturday 7th November 2009,  HAESCO invited members, family and friends for a social trip, and everyone enjoyed the junk trip with a difference.

Thanks to Mr Dominic Yin,  we were on board the AVIVA sponsored junk.  Mr. Sam Cheng (HKU) briefed the gathering about the use and application of the interesting Renewable energy technologies PV panels on the decking, and micro wind turbines used for battery charging, etc. etc.

The original lighting fittings were replaced with energy efficient LED and fluorescent lamps for illumination purposes.

Also a heat pump provides water heater and air-conditioning. This is a device that can produce over 50 degrees water for shower, cooking, cleaning and cool air for space conditioning simultaneously. It is considered as a device with high energy efficiency.  It is a new product with capability of generating instant hot water from the system and heated up by the heat energy exhausted from the operating air conditioner.

Aviva cruised gracefully across to Lamma with ease, on arrival we headed up the hill to visit the wind turbine site.  After a briefing from Mr Kwok (HKE) about the 800kw turbine,  we set off down to Yung Shue Wan for a great seafood lunch at sea-view restaurant.

Honestly, I was so busy at the energyLAB booth this year I had little time to visit every other exhibitor,  however the consensus of other members I spoke with was clear, the event was certainly better than last year.

Visiting Delegation
If that was not enough work for HAESCO, and our members, we also co-hosted a Japanese environmental delegation comprising ten firms who were seeking opportunities, and partners in the environmental sector. Business matching session, and a networking cocktail party were kindly arrange by HKTDC.

In addition to this Japanese delegation, other countries had organised delegations specifically for this event.

Again this year HAESCO supported the expo with a HAESCO booth. We must thank HAESCO members Ecotechalliance, and Focus Energy for supporting HAESCO’s presence at this important annual event.

Signing a contract whether with an ESCO for energy services, or any other supplier always carries some element of risk, particularly when the underlying economy could be characterised as somewhat unstable.

Locally we have witnessed manufacturers in the PRD region been hit hard, an empty order book is a more serious concern.  Therefore whilst it might be sensible to save energy, undertaking a long term ESCO contract, say for five (5) years,  is not exactly a high priority in today’s marketplace.

HAESCO joined forces with the FHKI and HKTDC to support and build the 2009 Hong Kong Pavilion at the eco asia expo 2009, http://www.ecoexpoasia.com/ which will be held 28-31 October 2009 in Hong Kong.

Thanks to the effort of HAESCO events committee several HAESCO members have taken up the opportunity for discounted space offered to members, and support the Hong Kong Pavilion.

UPDATE:

First, I must thank to our chairman Dominic Yin who provided some great photos from our roundtable event on 7th July 2009.  I must also thank our speaker Mr Constant Van Aerschot, for his time and insightful presentation of the WBCSD report Transforming the Market: Energy Efficiency in Buildings and its findings.  We had a robust discussion of the various pressing issues arising from the presentation, and I feel everyone enjoyed the stimulating debate, covering definition of green buildings, LEED, BEAM, China, building energy efficiency, climate change and much more.  Finally, I must thank HAESCO director, Mr David Leung for helping organising this HAESCO event.

HAESCO together with FOE (Friends of the Earth) organised a forum, but unlike other events delegate’s had the opportunity to express their view on the energy business sector in Hong Kong to everyone present.

With over 100 delegates, they where seated around a table forming teams, and each team comprised 8-10 people.

Angus from FOE had a prepared a few questions in advance to entice the teams to answer in their response. After the discussion period the table leader was invited to the stage to deliver the views of their table to the audience, and received a Oneclick technologies energy saving plug.

One issue each table offered was education, educating government, educating business, and educating the general public.  It is a key issue, if we want wider acceptance of alternate business models, including performance contracting, business needs to know these options exist. Not to replace traditional ways of doing business, but to supplement them. Performance Contacts is just one option, it will never suit everyone and that’s fine. In other countries the ESCO companies started with government projects, then moved into the private sector, here the Hong Kong government has been painfully slow to show any interest, hoping that the commercial sector will be enough.

Hong Kong government or LEGCO didn’t offer any opinion.

Another important outcome was the financing for energy efficiency, presently banks and LFI’s (Local Financial Institutions) are stuck, only offering traditional loan services based on upfront collateral, and also fail to recognise the resulting cashflow generated by energy efficiency projects.

Delegates put forward a number of opinions, including loan guarantee by Hong Kong government, the setting up of a fund, and others. As other have any already pointed out, the existing SME loan guarantee scheme is not working as intended, and doesn’t educate the banks about energy project finance.

In addition to the forum session, a number of exhibitions booths allowed delegates to browse the latest services, equipment, and technology available.

Along with FOE’s director Mr Edwin Lau FOE opening presentation, Mr John Herbert HAESCO’s Vice chairman was also invited to provide opening remarks.

I must give special thanks to HAESCO’s own Mr Lawrence Wong Oneclick Technologies. Lawrence a founding director of HAESCO provided a free energy saving device for every table leader.

Several HAESCO directors and HAESCO members attended to support the event forum, I thank them all, including Simon Cheng (Honorary Treasurer), Mr Lawrence Wong,  Mr David Leung, Mr Joe Ng,  Mr Thomas Heinrich, and Mr Eddy Lui.

Both David Leung, and Thomas Heinrich also deserve a special mention, and additional thanks for taking up the challenge and supporting the exhibition. Below are some more pictures from the event, including the exhibition booths area.

Yesterday (27 April 2009) ADB issued their report “The Economics of Climate Change i Southeast Asia: A Regional Review” (download report, 10MB, PDF).

One of the five sectors to help mitigate climate change is as expected the energy sector.

The study observed that climate change is already affecting Southeast Asia, with rising temperature,
decreasing rainfall, rising sea levels, increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events leading to massive flooding, landslides and drought causing extensive damage to property, assets, and human life. Climate change is also exacerbating the problem of water stress, affecting agriculture production, causing forest fires, degrading forests, damaging coastal marine resources, and increasing outbreaks of infectious diseases.

The report urges that Southeast Asian countries should treat adaptation as an extension of sustainable development practices. Its key elements include: adapting agricultural practices to changes in temperature and precipitation; adapting water management to greater risk of floods and droughts; adapting coastal zone management to higher sea levels; safeguarding forest areas from forest fires and degradation; adapting people to threats of vector-borne infectious diseases. Southeast Asia countries need to take timely action to adapt to climate change, build resilience, and minimize the costs caused by the impact driven by GHG emissions that have been locked into the climate system.

The key word is action, we need to help create action today.
