Forbes online version of the magazine published on 28 October 2011 Tom Konrad writes a useful article about ESCO’s in the USA (link) , the blog is focused on green stocks, and this piece cites Lime Energy Co (NASD:LIME) but it also discusses the ESCO model widely accepted in US and one which we at HAESCO promote here in Hong Kong, China and Asia.

Pathways to Low Carbon Economy Abatement Curve 2009 V2

The above graphic pull from McKinsey’s (link) 2009 report titled “Pathways to Low Carbon Economy V2 “nicely illustrates what we know already, building efficiency improvements offer the largest area of lowest cost opportunities.

Bundling

Some background, the cost of investment and carbon saved from a single large building project just doesn’t interest the city, it’s too small. For high flying investors, and financiers capital in the region of US$ 10-50 million is interesting.

So for buildings to achieve this scale several projects needed to be packaged or bundled together. Then the quantity of energy efficiency work, the CAPex, and the CO2 credit could reach significance to allow the project proponents to achieve scale and Co2E quantities saleable in the market. Significance is the key word, I mean just offering a few tonnes of REC’s (Carbon Credits or equivalent) is not a transaction that most firms and broker would consider worth the effort.

China has the largest building construction market in the world and it is growing at an explosive rate. The World Bank estimates that by 2015, half of the world’s building construction will take place in China. Chinese government has invested hundreds of billions of dollars in green building in order to combining further economic growth with increased energy supply security and reduced local air pollution. The combination of China’s booming construction industry and its critical need for green buildings makes it a very exciting international opportunity for green building products and services.

As China’s premier green design and construction conference, Global Green Building (GGB) features a broad range of sessions focusing on design, economics, technologies, project delivery models, and products that lead to high performance buildings and minimize the environmental impacts of our creations. The GGB 2011 aims to provide a highly professional forum that promotes collaborative excellence between stakeholders. It will bring together key stakeholders and expert speakers from around the world to promote eco-friendly design and construction methods and solutions that foster green building development.

GGB will bring together over 200 leaders and specialists from more than 30 countries.

GGB IS THE IDEAL PLATFORM TO:

Tap the market potential

Lean and hear from world class speakers

Access key decision makers in green building

Understand rating tools and regulations

View the latest products, services and technologies

Acquire insight into the economics and trends of green building

The main conference, themed “Smart City”, invites world renowned panel of city planners, architects, experts and business leaders to share their global insight and experience on exploring how to develop a sustainable smart city, including the overall visionary policies formation, evolution of transport system development, technological and commercial innovation, pioneer design solutions that to drive smart resource management e.g. energy optimization / saving and low emission multi-storey buildings.

Besides the Smart City conference, the InnoAsia 2010 consists of business matching forum, venture / angel workshops and series of technology insights knowledge transfer.
Standby power waste is a critical issue, the individual appliance losses might be consider small, but when combined together the losses are staggering. Keeping all those Television sets, set top boxes, amps, tuners, and DVD players “ON” 24/7 is an enormous waste of electricity.

Figures are scarce here in Asia, however in studies from Europe identified the opportunity. One report [link] states that the standby energy for all households in the EU-27 countries amounts to about 43 TWh, and it is responsible for about 19 million tonnes of C02 per year .

Therefore is good to see companies like OneClick Technologies [link] adding yet another award to its collection. The gadget website T3 [link] has recognized the OneClick (right) as the Green Gadget of the Year 2010.

It’s reported that firms located in China, India and other countries have perhaps deliberately produced an industrial chemical, the result a byproduct, HFC 23 which is a potent GHG.

Measurement and Verification (M&V) is critical for energy efficiency projects to ensure customers have independent validation that the promised cost savings have been fully achieved. The transaction cost should be eased with the latest version of the International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol (IPMVP). Download your own copy free from the EVO Web site (http://www.evo-world.org)

I have just downloaded my own copy, so I can’t review it just yet, however the press release offers some insight stating:

……amended edition of the 2009 IPMVP Volume I (Concepts and Options for Determining Energy and Water Savings) continues to make the protocol more easily usable by a global audience by adding region-specific content and providing tools such as a technical unit conversion table.

Having a specification such as IPMVP provides a common language, that will help every aspect of the energy sector develop, and hopefully encourage potential customers to engage, take advice from energy professionals, and enjoy reducing those excessive operating costs.

Its Child’s Play Really

Talking about savings, a local facility manager recently recalled that group of school children want to initiate an energy savings in their school, they set a goal to reduce the operating cost of their school by 10% and they named themselves the 10% Club.

I am sure many supported their good intention, and at the same yet doubted what could be achieved. However they surprised all the skeptics, beating their target returning 17% savings! (not verified of course)

Imagine for a moment how much would have an energy professional saved, 30% or more? In the rush for IRR’s, ROI’s and payback support, the real opportunity is often overlooked, it’s not only about having a lower cost today, its the recurrent savings, yielding cost reductions year after year that we should be after.
