Scotland has set some of the most aggressive goals for renewable energy production in Europe – 50% by 2020 – and is making significant progress towards achieving them. Famous for its wild weather and seas, Scotland has managed to embrace these natural phenomena to its advantage and harvest these resources to replace fossil fuels, and taking steps towards becoming the energy exporter for Europe.
Scotland’s ‘renewables’ success straddles energy types, different geographies, numerous stakeholders, and has resulted in an energy evolution that is an interesting case study on long term thinking, working together and across typical silos and capitalising on what natural resources are available.
Of particular interest to HAESCO members will surely be the project finance aspect, partnering agreements, and new technology. For project finance, if renewable energy projects can be financed in Scotland how can we leverage and apply this expertise for innovative project finance elsewhere in Asia? How were these projects backed? by international banks, grants, esco, or government funding?
